New
York City – Survivor Tree Ceremony and Brunch
The World Trade Center Survivors’ Network would like to extend an invitation to
all members of the September 11 community to attend our Survivor Tree Ceremony
and Brunch, which will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2007 from 10:30am to 2pm
at the Living Memorial Grove in City Hall Triangle Park (on Park Row, across
from City Hall). The Survivor Tree, a gift from our friends in Oklahoma
City, has grown in Lower Manhattan from a cutting of the American
elm tree that stood in the parking lot of the former Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
We planted the Survivor Tree last year in the Living Memorial Grove near City
Hall. It stands next to five trees that stood in the World Trade
Center Plaza
and survived. The annual bloom and beauty of the tree symbolizes the solidarity
of survivors -- our common hope for the future and our desire to build a world
of peace, free of terrorism, where liberty, democracy, and respect for human
dignity are universally honored. At the Tree Ceremony, brief words of
reflection will be given by Oklahoma
City and WTC Survivors, with musical selections from
the Peace of Heart Choir. We will also pay tribute to various groups within the
September 11th Community. A rose-petal ceremony will honor each person lost in
the World Trade
Center , Shanksville and the Pentagon,
as well as in Oklahoma City.
To RSVP, please email us at contact@survivorsnet.org
New York City - StoryCorps
StoryCorps is a national oral history project to
instruct and inspire people to record each other's stories in sound. As the
9/11 anniversary approaches, StoryCorps especially
invites individuals wishing to remember a lost loved one- or reflect on their
survival stories and lives in the post 9-11 era, to come to our StoryBooths in NYC. We encourage participants to come with
a family member or friend, as the most meaningful conversations occur between
people who are part of each other's lives. Should a participant come alone, a
facilitator will serve as their interview partner. The content is entirely up
to each person. At the end of the 1-hour session, participants receive a
broadcast-quality CD recording to pass to friends and loved ones. For those
outside NYC, the StoryKit program allows individuals
to rent (for free) our equipment and record their stories at home. With
permission from participants, each interview will be housed at the Library of
Congress and the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation for future generations to
listen and remember. All interviews are free of charge for our "September
11th Outreach" partners. For information about the September 11th
Initiative and to listen to interviews go to: http://www.storycorps.net/wtc

Art Exhibit and Opening Reception
Ms. Shandler, a New York-based artist, created and
extensive installation titled GESTURE, which is being exhibited at the Honfleur Gallery. This piece holds one individual brick
sized painting for every life lost at the World Trade
Center. When hung
together, the installation looks like a large translucent rainbow from afar,
but up-close you see small depictions of the events that happened on that
tragic day. The Gesture model will be used on September 10, 2007 for youth
ages, 5-13, to create their own community gesture. To
enroll your child, contact Andrea Hope at (202) 631-6291 or email
